How to create my first demo? First map? First game?

Hi everyone,

For years I have been tampering with this software but to no avail. I still don't know how to make a solid map or game or even demo. I'd like to use this software for video creation as I think the GTEST demo was phenomenal at showcasing retro graphics.
Does anyone have any tips on how to get started? I'd love to make it worth your while if you're interested in making tutorials as I'm eventually interested in making my mine.
